America's shame

It's a few weeks since I've been near a television, so an important milestone passed me by.
Guantanamo Bay marked its fifth birthday on January 11. And, as human rights group Amnesty International points out, not one charge has been brought.
In a comment piece in its January/Feburary magazine, director Kate Allen puts it powerfully:
"January 11 is exactly five years on from the first sinister scenes of men in orange jump suits, ear muffs and blindfold, being offloaded from planes at Guantanamo Bay. Half a decade, and not one person has yet been found guilty of any offence. It is time for the US to admit that this dangerous experiment with unilateral justice has failed miserably.
"At least eight of the prisoners are UK residents. One, Jamil el-Banna, has been held since 2003 and has never met the youngest of his five children, born a few months after he was detained.
"...fundamental human rights are being violated in the name of security, in our name. We don't accept that it has to be like this."
