brute force
A Wigan woman who suffered the most horrific facial injuries in a sustained attack by her partner - who battered her unconscious with a set of dumbells - has taken the brave step of letting her photograph be released.
The case, which I covered for the Manchester Evening News, saw abuser Michael Southern put behind bars for an indefinite period for what he did to girlfriend of three years, Jane London.
Southern has form when it comes to such attacks and is known to get violent when he drinks. The court heard how police domestic violence investigators knew of eight previous incidents involving Ms London.
And in the past he was jailed for a year for attacking a partner with a rolling pin.
Who knows how many times he has done it to this woman or previous girlfriends and got away without being reported. Researchers believe most victims - and they aren't always women - put up with at least 35 attacks before they reach breaking point and seek help.
As a spokesman for Women’s Aid, said: “Society must start seeing domestic abuse as the outrageous crime that it is."
