Thinly veiled racism

It's been said a million times before but there's something decidedly sinister about the attitude of some UK newspapers towards people of colour, and particularly Muslims.
For months now there have been almost daily articles in our tabloids aimed squarely - it would appear - at whipping up islamaphobia and heightening tension between different communities. Almost like a pack of dogs which smell blood and are determined to go for the kill.
No sooner had the row about the rights and wrongs of wearing burkas, face veils and niqabs begun to die down than we're told they are being banned in Holland, known until now for its tolerance and liberalism.
True to form, The Sun was quick to produce its metaphorical wooden spoon and trot out some typically inflamatory language:

"Holland’s move is bound to reopen the debate in Britain about the wearing of traditional Muslim dress...After France banned the wearing of headscarves in schools, the Dutch government decided to leave that question up to individual schools. Most allow headscarves. But women who wear burkas to job interviews in Utrecht have had their welfare payouts axed. Officials accuse them of being deliberately clad from head to foot knowing they will not be successful so they can carry on sponging off the state."

"Sponging off the state?"

Whatever happened to objective reporting, and recording the facts without comment?
The thing which I find particularly insidious about this kind of writing, now the norm in the popular press, is the sly and deliberate way these papers drop little phrases like this into their articles.
So few positive stories are told about Britain's ethnic or immigrant communities, that some members of the public really do seem to believe most are either "bogus", "illegals", "spongers" or "terrorists" and couldn't possibly contribute anything positive to society or - shock horror - need our help.
This, in turn, plays into the hands of far right groups like the BNP, which the tabloids also love to hate. But while all newspapers love to take the moral high ground, they can't have it both ways. If they're going to demonise anyone with a browner shade of skin, they have to also take some responsibility for the increasing racism on the streets.
