Is Britain failing its cancer patients?
That's what Professor Gordon McVie, a former chief executive of Cancer Research UK, and currently clinical director at the European Institute of Oncology in Milan, claimed when I interviewed him for the Big Issue in the North:
"Britain is leading the way when it comes to developing new techniques and drugs.
The charity Cancer Research UK, the leading international funding body, bankrolls cutting-edge trials aimed at understanding the disease better and developing new treatments, and the results are published internationally. Last year, virtually all its £257m budget came from public donations.
"Yet what few people realise is that the UK also has one of the worst cancer treatment records in the western world."
