sentencing madness

There's something wrong with the sentencing system in this country.
Last week, Stuart Brown, a consultant anesthetist was fined £500 after he dragged his wife out of bed and punched her at least 24 times. The incident was preceded by seven years of verbal and physical abuse
"No punishment this court could enforce could come anywhere near the impact you feel this had on you, your profession and your colleagues," presiding magistrate, John Warne, told Brown.
Fast forward seven days, and two teenage graffiti artists have been jailed for 12 and 15 months by a court in Manchester for criminal damage. Okay, so the damage cost £24,000, but it was still only damage to inanimate objects. Not to human beings.
