what's the alternative?
Email from Cllr Steve Radford, Leader of Liverpool Liberal Party Group, also in relation to this:
"We are hammering home the issue of demolitions and the impact on housing waiting lists, got CPO outcome. Well, it's official, government does not believe if home owners forced out are worse off is a valid reason or objection.
"Even worse, inspectors justified demolition on the basis residents hadn't put forward alternative schemes.
"The poorest neighbourhoods in one of the poorest low paid cities having an army of architects in their back pocket of course"
......
"inspectors justified demolition on the basis residents hadn't put forward alternative schemes"
This is an interesting, if slightly confusing point. I don't know the details of the CPO case Cllr Radford is talking about, but it does seem that there is a lack of continuity between regeneration schemes in Liverpool.
Residents of the Granby Triangle, after all, have tried to put forward alternative ideas for what could be done with their homes - only to be blown out by the developer/council (although it should be pointed out that this scheme is at an early stage, and anything could happen).
As they told me when I visited the area, they have tried to put the point across that many terraces could be made structurally sound and fitted with central heating, double glazing and solar panels for about £30,000 each – far lower than the cost of replacement.
Curiouser and curiouser.
