"A hugely impressive multi-media documentary in words, pictures and sound...which traces the development of the housing market renewal policy and its human consequences. Streetfighters is a living, vibrant, open-ended piece of reportage" - Patrick Butler, The Guardian.

The project which became Streetfighters developed organically. I frequently covered urban regeneration as a journalist, so when I became interested in photography and later audio and multimedia, it made sense to put these skills together as a piece of independent reportage.

Most people in the project were affected by Housing Market Renewal (HMR). From 2003, the New Labour government deemed some urban areas of the North of England to be suffering from “housing market failure” - and in need of radical action to attract new residents. Much of the housing targeted for demolition happened to be Victorian terraces, often sturdy properties.

Over the course of several years I met as many people fighting the bulldozers as I could, making portraits and recording their stories. This page is only part of what I produced between 2006 and 2014 - all the work (ie print stories and audio/multimedia) can be seen on the project site here.

Streetfighters received an honourable mention in the digital category of the 2011 Amnesty International Media Awards.
